Local Artist Unveils Masterwork Sculpture:
“The Ecstasy of St. Teresa”
Local
goldsmith
Stephen
V. O’Meara unveils his masterwork
sculpture on Thursday 8th April at
7pm
at his gallery on
Marshall Way
. Entitled
“The Ecstasy of St. Teresa,” the piece stands 8 1/8” tall, 6 1/8” wide,
and 4 ¼” deep, and is made from
solid 18kt Gold and Lapis Lazuli.
The piece, with its minute detailing and stonework, took over three years of
painstaking work to complete. A
quartz crystal lens on the top allows light to strike the interior figures, and
black onyx highlights of inlay add richness to the Lapis Lazuli stonework.
The artist saw the original sculpture by Bernini when on a trip to
Rome
in 1968, and was so transfixed by its
beauty that he vowed one day to make one himself.
Bernini called the original sculpture “one of my least bad works” and later
in life was sometimes to be found quietly praying before it.
The unveiling marks the opening of the artist’s month-long exhibit:
“Articles of Faith, Evidence of the Unseen: a celebration of art &
artifact during Easter and Passover.”
