Monteith Bowl
Sterling Silver
$850.00
7/8" high x 1 5/8" wide x 1 5/8" deep

This spectacular bowl is a miniature reproduction of a piece by John Coney (1655-1702); a man regarded as the preeminent goldsmith of the American colonial era.

The name refers to the rim of the bowl resembling the scalloped cloak of the famous 17th century mad Scotsman "Monteith."  The notches of the rim enable glasses to be hung by their stems, their bowls cooling in iced water.  In the 1690's, larger versions were made with lion mask handles, as in Coney's example.

The original is in the Yale University Art Gallery, and is one of only three known examples of this form made in colonial America.
